Trident Gum in Argentina: The Actual Name You Need

If you walk into a supermarket in Buenos Aires and ask for Trident, most people will look at you like you just asked for something from another planet. The gum you know as Trident is sold under the name Dentyne in Argentina. Same peppery fresh taste, same sugar-free formula, different packaging and a completely different brand identity on the shelf. Dentyne is the brand. It's been around since the early 1900s, originally marketed as a dental hygiene product before it became a gum brand. Unilever owns both names globally, but they chose to keep Dentyne as the standalone brand in several South American markets instead of rebranding everything to Trident. I learned this the hard way during a layover in Ezeiza back in 2019. I hadn't eaten in hours, grabbed a pack of Trident from memory at the duty-free shop, chewed one piece, and immediately realized this didn't taste right. The mint profile was sharper, almost medicinal compared to what I was used to. Turns out the Argentine version uses a slightly different flavor blend and the sugar substitute profile isn't identical. Not a dealbreaker, but noticeable if you're a regular.

The gum itself sits on the same shelves as other mints and breath fresheners, usually near the checkout counters or in the candy aisle. You'll find Dentyne in every major chain, from Carrefour to Jumbo to those small kiosks you see on every corner. Prices run roughly between 300 and 600 pesos per pack depending on the variant and where you buy it. One thing worth noting: the Argentinian Dentyne comes in a few varieties that don't exist under the Trident name back home. Dentyne Ice hits harder. Dentyne White has a whitening claim that honestly does very little. And there's a wintergreen version that's genuinely good if you're into that. If you're traveling there and want the closest thing to Trident, grab any Dentyne pack and you're set. If you specifically need Trident branding for some reason, it's sometimes available in import stores in neighborhoods like Palermo or Puerto Madero, but you'll pay triple the price and the selection will be limited. Just get Dentyne and move on with your life.
