How Porygon Evolves Into Porygon-Z
Porygon is a Gen 2 Pokémon that gets cut off from its final evolution unless you go out of your way to do it. It holds an upgrade item, trades, and that's it. A lot of people don't realize this because the Pokédex never shows the next evolution if you just level up. I found this out the hard way about ten years ago when I tried raising a Porygon in Platinum only to hit level 100 and get nothing. I ended up on a message board looking for answers that nobody had clearly posted. The setup is straightforward but easy to mess up if you're casual about it. You need two things: an Upgrade item in Porygon's held item slot, and a trade partner. That's literally all the game checks for. Level doesn't matter. Friendship doesn't matter. If it trades while holding Upgrade, it becomes Porygon-Z. I've seen people try to use the Link Corner in Pokémon Home and wonder why it doesn't work. That's not going to trigger the evolution. The game has to run the actual evolution check at trade time, and Home's deposit system doesn't do that. You need an actual trade through the Nintendo Switch online infrastructure or an inline cable adapter if you're doing it on original hardware.
Here's what I usually tell people to do. Trade with someone online who also has an Upgrade. Both of you hold the item before the trade starts. Make sure the Upgrade is showing in the held item slot, not just sitting in your bag. I wasted two trades once because I thought I had it equipped and hadn't actually assigned it. The game wouldn't evolve it and I didn't catch the mistake until someone asked if I was sure. There are some edge cases worth knowing about. If you try to evolve Porygon into Porygon2 first using a Dubious Disk, then trade that Porygon2 holding an Upgrade, it will still evolve into Porygon-Z. The chain works either direction but going straight to Z is faster. The other thing that trips people up is the GTS. You can absolutely use the Global Trade Station to evolve Porygon, but there's no guarantee anyone will take it unless you offer something attractive in return. I've left Porygon on the GTS for weeks before someone finally took it. Another detail nobody mentions is that Porygon-Z has an ability called Adaptability that changes how same-type attack bonus works. Normally STAB gives 1.5x damage. Adaptability bumps it to 2x. Combined with a Choice Scarf and a full Special Attacker EV spread, Porygon-Z can hit hard enough to one-shot a lot of things in competitive play that would normally survive a neutral hit. I run it on a Doubles team and it's been more reliable than I expected given how fragile it is otherwise.
The main downside to this whole process is just how much friction there is. You have to find another person willing to trade with you. The Online Trading servers are down for some older games depending on what region you're in. And the Upgrade itself isn't always easy to get early. In most games it comes from Professor Oak after you beat the Champion, which means if you're trying to complete a Pokédex from scratch, you won't be able to attempt this until late game anyway. If you want a workaround for when trading isn't possible, there isn't really one outside of emulator save editing or trading between multiple consoles you own. The game simply does not have a level-based evolution path for this line. It's programmed to only check for the trade plus Upgrade condition. I tried trading with a second Switch running my own Pokémon Diamond cartridge back in 2019 just to avoid waiting for a stranger, and it worked fine. Two devices, two copies of the game, one upgrade each. That's the most reliable method if you have access to another console. Porygon-Z is viable in certain formats but it's not top tier. Its base stats are high on paper but its defenses are terrible and it needs support to function properly. You'll see it in NFE bans for that reason alone. The evolution itself takes about thirty seconds if you already have everything set up. Most of the time people spend on it is just waiting for a trade partner.
