Where to Drink in Church Stretton Without Leaving Your Car

Church Stretton is small. You can walk from the top of the high street to the bottom in about twelve minutes. That means the pub options are limited, but they're solid. I've been coming here for years and I've learned which places actually serve decent beer versus which ones just have a nice exterior and a wine-focused menu.

The Top Church Stretton Pubs You Need To Visit This Summer

The George Hotel sits right on the square and it's the obvious first stop. Real ales, proper food, and a beer garden that actually gets sun in the afternoon. The cask selection rotates weekly through their Young's connection, so if you're chasing something specific you'll need to ask. I went here last August expecting a good IPA on and wasn't given much help by the bar staff. My workaround was simple: go early, before 6pm, when someone's actually trying to do their job instead of managing the dinner rush. The Fox and Hounds is the quieter option down by the river. Single real ale keg, no frills. Good for a pint if you're already walking the Wrekin trail and need something cold without the theatricality of the bigger places. The food is decent pub grub, nothing fancy. I've had worse steak and ale pies in proper restaurants. The Crown Hotel has undergone a revival in the last few years. They brought in a proper beersense system and now rotate local Wrekin Brewery taps alongside a solid cask roster. The menu expanded too — they do proper lunches now, not just crisps and pasties. This is the one most visitors miss because it's set back slightly from the main drag. Go on a Tuesday afternoon and you'll have the place to yourself with the full beer list available without anyone breathing down your neck.

The Feathers is my regular. Small, unpretentious, and they actually know their beers. Real Ale Classics on tap regularly, and the landlady sources casks directly from Small Ales in Shrewsbury. The garden is tiny but usable, and on hot days you stand in it like it's the most valuable real estate in Shropshire. Only downside is they don't do food, so you eat before or after. This matters more than you'd think in summer when everywhere else is packed. One thing nobody tells you about visiting Church Stretton in summer: the car parking situation around the George and Crown is brutal after 4pm on Fridays and Saturdays. I learned this the hard way during the Wrekin Festival last year. Spent forty minutes circling before giving up and walking from the overflow lot near the leisure centre. If you're driving, arrive before 3pm or don't drive at all. The place is walkable from Ilminster or Ironbridge if you're staying locally. Another practical note: several of these pubs close between bars. The George does 12:30-2:30 and 5-10pm. The Feathers closes at 11pm most nights and doesn't open for lunch on weekdays. Check before you walk, especially in July when seasonal hours shift without warning. I've turned up at half-closed doors more times than I care to admit.
