MyTrack After the Latest Update
I've been using TCC's MyTrack system for about three years now, mostly as an advisor trying to keep track of which students are falling through the cracks before midterms hit. The latest update landed last week, and honestly, it's a mixed bag. Let me walk through what actually changed, what still sucks, and how I've adjusted my workflow. The main change is the dashboard reorganization. They've moved the early-alert flags to the top of the screen instead of burying them in a sidebar menu where they used to be. On paper this sounds great. In practice, it means you see red flags immediately, which is good if you want to prioritize intervention, but it also makes the page feel cluttered if you're looking at a full roster of 80 students. I spent about ten minutes yesterday just trying to get the view to collapse so I could actually scan names without each flag taking up half the vertical space. They also added a bulk-message feature. This is probably the single most useful addition. Before this update, if I wanted to email ten students who hadn't logged into mycourses in five days, I had to individually select each one and compose separate messages or copy-paste the same text ten times. Now you can select multiple students, write one message, and send it to everyone at once. The caveat is that the message template options are limited. You can't do much formatting, and there's no way to insert dynamic fields like the student's name or specific course section. So you end up writing "Hey, I noticed you haven't been in my courses" which feels a bit robotic. Still, it cut my weekly outreach time from about 45 minutes down to maybe 12.
Another thing they changed is the attendance export. Previously, the CSV export would only go back 60 days. Now it's 90 days by default. This matters more than it sounds because a lot of our at-risk students show patterns that don't become obvious until week six or seven. Having that extra month in the export lets you actually see the trajectory instead of just the recent dip. There's also a new "predictive risk score" feature that some people are excited about. It assigns a number from 1 to 100 based on attendance, grades, and login frequency. The problem is that the scoring algorithm isn't transparent and the cutoff thresholds aren't documented anywhere I can find. I asked IT about this and got a polite email saying the methodology is proprietary. So we're supposed to trust a number we can't examine. I've started using it as a rough heuristic rather than a definitive label, which means ignoring scores in the 40-60 range because they seem arbitrary, and treating anything above 70 as a real concern. That's not ideal, but it's what I've got. One edge case that tripped me up on day one of the update: if a student has been enrolled in a course for less than three days, their data doesn't appear in any reports yet. I spent two entire afternoons wondering why five newly transferred students weren't showing up in my early-alert list. Turns out they just hadn't hit the three-day threshold. There's no notification or indicator on the screen that tells you this. I wrote down the rule so I wouldn't forget it next time, but it's the kind of thing that should be built into the interface.
The mobile app version hasn't been updated to match yet, which means if you're checking things on your phone while walking between buildings, you're seeing an older layout. It's not a dealbreaker but it's annoying when you're trying to do something quickly and the buttons are in different places. Overall, the update makes routine tasks faster but introduces enough UI confusion that you lose time adjusting. If you're just using MyTrack to look up individual student records, you probably won't notice much difference. If you're doing cohort-level monitoring and outreach like I am, the bulk messaging and extended export window are genuinely helpful. The risk score is a nice idea that needs more work before it's trustworthy. I'd recommend spending a few hours actually walking through the new interface rather than assuming everything works the same way, because a lot of what used to be in one place has moved, and the help documentation hasn't caught up. If you want the download or access link, it's through the TCC student portal at tcc.edu/mytrack. You need your G-number login. No third-party installer is needed, and I wouldn't trust any site claiming to have a standalone version.
